Where Are All the Job Seekers?

Where Are All the Job Seekers?

When you have an open job, you expect it to be filled quickly. But posting and praying isn't enough. You have to be methodical and thoughtful about the way you advertise your jobs to make them enticing to the right people. Follow these tips to attract your ideal candidates to your job.

Always Start Fresh

Job responsibilities are always evolving, and if you are using old descriptions to write job ads, you're doing yourself a disservice. Always work with the role's direct supervisor to ensure accuracy before posting.

Use Real Job Titles

It's trendy to use light phrases like "sales ninja" or "rock star" in job ads, but these terms can harm your ability to find talent. They are not searchable, and they may even turn off some job seekers. Use the real job title in all ads.

Open With A Hook

Begin with a concise overview of the job function, how it contributes to company objectives and the value the role brings to the organization. This will help candidates see why this job matters.

Avoid Exclusionary Language

You may be looking for an "aggressive" person who is a "perfectionist," but not all talented people see themselves in extremes. Try to avoid extreme modifiers, as they can cost you talent.

Incorporate Cultural Information

Candidates want to know whether they will thrive in your working environment, so be upfront about your company culture in the job description.

Post Salary Information

If you're afraid to post salary information, you're probably not paying enough. Job seekers want to know if a job pays enough before they spend (and potentially waste) time applying. Post salary ranges, so job seekers know what you're offering.

Provide Your Location

The location of a job is often second in importance to salary. For many candidates, location can be a deal-breaker. If you don't want to waste time on candidates who cannot or will not commute, be transparent about where the job is located.

Create A Sense of Urgency

There's a reason why so many commercials and ads offer "limited time only" deals. Creating a sense of urgency motivates people to act. You want candidates to feel a sense of urgency to apply, even if you aren't desperate to fill the role. Always provide an application deadline.

Make It More Than Two Sentences

Often, companies post two-sentence job descriptions and ads, then wonder why no one applies or why too many of the wrong people apply. Your job description should be a minimum of 150 words for search engines, and important information should be listed out in bullets, so it's easy for job seekers to read.
